Sandeep Bhagwati is a multiple award-winning composer, theatre maker and media artist. His compositions and comprovisations (including 6 operas/music theatre works) are regularly performed and published worldwide. He is also known for his stagings of large interdisciplinary music/theatre projects in Europe and North America. He has directed and participated in several intercultural exchange projects with Indian and Chinese musicians and leading new music ensembles, such as Ensemble Modern and Klangforum Wien. Since 2013, he is also the artistic director and conductor of two trans-traditional new music ensembles: Ensemble Extrakte Berlin, and since 2015 also Sangeet Prayog Pune (India) and has created trans-traditional music projects with ensembles in Montréal, Istanbul, Oslo, and the UK. Since 2006, has been a Professor and, from 2006- 2016, also Canada Research Chair for Inter X-Arts at Concordia University Montréal, where he founded and directs the matralab, a lab for artistic research in the live arts. As a researcher, he has published widely, and is a frequent keynote speaker at both academic and artistic events. He is a founding co-editor of “TURBA – The Journal for Global Practices in Live Arts Curation”. Bhagwati has founded, curated and directed several international music festivals in Germany and Canada and is a jury and board member for several international festivals, grants and advocacy organizations. His current work centers on techniques and practices of comprovisation, on trans-traditional aesthetics and decolonization in musical life, on interactive, non-visual score technologies and on the role of music and sound in the Anthropocene.
