The Batwa tribe once lived in the forests of Uganda before the government forced them out

While they struggle to keep their traditional skills and culture alive, music and dance are still a way of life.

In this video, Sembagare, chief of the Birarala community in Kisoro, leads a group in a dance that would have once been performed for a king. The two men in front are playing the ikondera, a wind instrument made of bamboo and played like a horn. Clapping and drumming provide the repeated underlying rhythm.
