From the end of May to the beginning of June, Chenga commune in Nujiang prefecture experienced a red alert period of extremely high temperatures after a storm from the Indian Ocean caused rainfall.

This storm caused a huge climatic catastrophe in Myanmar, located to the west of the Gaoligong Mountains. Gaoligong lies on the west bank of the Nu River and acts as a natural barrier, reducing the storm's impact on Nujiang prefecture. Farmers in Nujiang prefecture are happy because they can finally plant rice thanks to the rain.

However, Nujiang prefecture inevitably entered a period of heat after the storm, with the highest temperature reaching 42 degrees Celsius in Chenga and Shangjiang townships. Farmers feel that this is the hottest summer they can remember, and are having to reconsider diverting water to irrigate their fields.

We've stayed in Chenga during most of the hot spells, and we've found that Chenga locals tend to spend their time on the bank of the Nu River as well as on the bridge at dusk to enjoy the cool breeze off the river. Some stay by the river to look for cicadas after sunset, which serve as delicious meals later on.

Cooling off by the river in summer is a unique childhood memory for our friends who grew up by the canyon's rivers. So we decided to record these moments at Chenga and make music for these memories.
