The Mottec hydroelectric power plant, located in the Valais Alps, is an integral part of the Forces Motrices de la Gougra network, which harnesses the waters of the Anniviers and Turtmann valleys

Its construction played a decisive role in the structural development of the Val d’Anniviers and profoundly transformed the way of life of its inhabitants.

Today, this same valley faces a growing environmental challenge: the management of sediments carried by mountain streams, particularly the Navisence river, which originates beneath the Zinal glacier. Due to climate change, the accelerated melting of glaciers and permafrost is releasing increasing quantities of rocks, gravel, and silt. Carried by the water, these materials pose a threat to human infrastructure, especially hydroelectric power plants.

How are these power plants preparing for the future in this changing context? René Baumann, former manager of the Mottec hydroelectric power plant, answers a few questions on the subject.
